Positive Sobriety Institute provides expert, confidential care for adults and professionals ready to take the first step toward lasting recovery. Our downtown Chicago facility is easily accessible from Old Town, offering a nationally recognized addiction treatment program without requiring you to venture far from your neighborhood.
Old Town is one of Chicago’s most characterful and enduring neighborhoods, a community with deep roots, a thriving arts scene, and a population as diverse as the city itself. From young professionals putting down their first roots to established figures who have called the neighborhood home for decades, Old Town carries an energy that is both vibrant and grounded.
Yet beneath the surface of any thriving community, addiction can take hold quietly and persistently. The pressures of professional life, personal responsibility, and the pace of city living all contribute to an environment where substance use can escalate before it is recognized for what it is.
Positive Sobriety Institute has been serving the Chicago community since 2014, offering drug rehab in Old Town, Chicago and surrounding neighborhoods through a program defined by clinical excellence, deep compassion, and a genuine respect for every client’s privacy and dignity. Our downtown location is a short and convenient journey from Old Town by car or public transit, making consistent, sustained engagement in treatment realistic and achievable.
PSI’s downtown Chicago facility is easily reachable from Old Town via a short drive south along Wells Street or Clark Street. The Red and Brown Line CTA trains also provide a straightforward connection from Old Town into the downtown corridor, and several bus routes serve the route directly.
Every client at PSI receives a treatment plan built around their individual needs, history, and goals. Our multidisciplinary team draws on a broad range of evidence-based clinical modalities alongside holistic therapies to deliver care that addresses the full complexity of addiction and supports recovery at every level.
Effective treatment begins with a thorough and honest understanding of where each client is starting from. PSI conducts a detailed evaluation covering substance use patterns, mental health, medical history, and personal circumstances. For professionals working in regulated or safety-sensitive roles, PSI’s affiliate program MCAP Chicago provides formal multi-day fitness for duty evaluations.
PSI’s PHP offers a full day of structured, intensive treatment five days a week. Programming includes personalized group therapy, individual counseling, addiction education, and access to psychiatric services, with clients returning home or to PSI’s sober living apartments each evening to maintain their personal and family lives.
PSI’s Intensive Outpatient Program is available in daytime and evening formats, built specifically around the demands of working professionals. Daytime IOP provides a structured half day of treatment five days a week, while evening IOP meets three nights per week. Both tracks deliver evidence-based group and individual therapy alongside ongoing psychiatric support.
Addiction rarely exists in isolation. Many clients present with co-occurring conditions including depression, anxiety, trauma, or other mental health challenges that must be addressed alongside the substance use disorder itself. PSI’s integrated approach treats both simultaneously, producing more comprehensive and durable outcomes.
PSI’s treatment model incorporates somatic therapy, mindfulness and meditation, yoga, art therapy, sound therapy, and nutritional wellness. These modalities address the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of recovery, supporting healing that goes beyond symptom management and reaches into the deeper layers of a person’s experience.
Recovery is a lifelong process, and PSI’s support does not end at discharge. Every client leaves with a personalized relapse prevention plan and ongoing access to PSI’s continuing care program, providing accountability, community, and support well beyond the formal treatment period.
For many people, the path to recovery begins not with a formal program but with a single honest conversation. PSI’s admissions team is available to speak with you confidentially, answer your questions, and help you understand what treatment might look like for your specific situation.

Posted on Sandeep SagarTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Positive Sobriety Institute is exceptional. From the first interaction through the full course of treatment, the team was professional, organized, and genuinely compassionate. PSI combines clinical excellence with real humanity — you’re treated with dignity while also being held accountable in a way that actually creates lasting change. The programming is structured, evidence-informed, and thoughtfully delivered. The individual and group therapy were consistently high quality, and the overall environment felt safe, steady, and focused. I also appreciated how responsive the staff was — questions were answered clearly, support was available when it mattered, and there was a sense that everyone was pulling in the same direction. What stood out most is that PSI isn’t just about “stopping” — it’s about rebuilding. They helped me develop practical tools for cravings, triggers, and emotional regulation, but also for life structure: routines, boundaries, and daily actions that support long-term recovery. The aftercare planning was especially strong — not just a generic handoff, but a realistic plan that connects the dots between treatment and real life. A big part of recovery is getting your life back, including returning to work and responsibilities. PSI helped me think through that transition in a grounded way: how to stay stable, how to stay connected, and how to do the next right thing even when life gets busy again. I left with clarity, structure, and momentum — and with real hope. If you or a loved one is serious about recovery and wants a place that takes treatment (and people) seriously, PSI is an outstanding choice. I’m deeply grateful for the care I received here.Posted on Eduardo AriasTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. It’s incredibly difficult to capture in a few sentences the positive changes I have experienced in my life due to my time at Positive Sobriety Institute. The saying “you get what you put in” is a very apt one. PSI helped me set a foundation that has changed my life in a way that merely must be witnesses. There’s a reason I only have Just For Today. PSI gave me the toolkit needed to get over the one year hump of being clean from alcohol, drugs, and other terrible things. I am forever in their debt. I only have JFT, may you find this place as well, do the footwork, so that “no addict ever need die from the horrors of addiction”. Thy will be done. cheers.Posted on MarkTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Entered with a high level of apprehension, low expectations and uncertainty. My experience here exceeded my expectations. The group of individuals and the process help build a very stable foundation for me. The psi leadership group st all levels weee outstanding. While the results are yet to unfold I left a better person and a solid vision of the future my group associates many have continued the connection through our journey.Posted on Randall LissTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. A staff of expert professionals run PSI. They have great insight and know how to get right to where it counts. Definitely the best place together help with addiction in the Chicago areaPosted on Doc OckTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Lots to say! I'm a physician, and was at PSI for 8 weeks in early 2025. Their main values are creating a sense of community and belonging, and encouraging self-reflection and self-discovery. I felt they were very trusting, encouraging gradual autonomy in the myriad available directions for assisted and self help, and in other ways like encouraging us to visit home or explore Chicago. While I was stretched financially, they were extremely charitable in ways I didn't expect, deepening my trust that they had my best interests over their financial interests. I know some people have understandable skepticism of rehab facility priorities, but you absolutely will not get ripped off here, and they transparently explained anything I asked about. They listen intently to feedback, and the hours and expectations are reasonable - if anything lenient to promote independence. The high-rise apartments have beautiful views, great location and amenities, and are clean and well-supplied. They handle Covid and health situations safely, and while I'd prefer no roommate, it does enhance mutual help and community. In fact, I stay in regular touch with people because of it. Chicago's expensive, but this was an investment in my future happiness, purpose, and fitting into the life I want. The program is well-designed and comprehensive, and I urge taking the customized treatment plan seriously, as it was a massively useful way to tailor various resource exposures to my needs and interests. They encouraged open-minded experimentation with a wide variety of treatment resources, resulting in a diverse toolkit to utilize upon discharge. This helped me handle stress, cravings (which will always pass), and generally be able to quickly reframe my outlook and adapt. Pouring your honest heart into the How It Was assignment is extremely revealing and cathartic, family counseling and resources were a relief, it seems everyone loves the small group sessions in which challenging supportively is favorable, there are several AA alternatives, and PSI was very supportive after I left. My attorney said the letter written for me was the best he'd seen, reflecting the program quality. For those of us who tend to isolate, the treatment community was really lovely, with regular community events for socializing, and open-door access to the various therapists. I want to especially say that I felt they genuinely cared about and got to know me, which made an enormous difference in my willingness to trust them and buy into the program. They got very excited when I made progress and develop insights, which really helps cultivate a sense of achievement. Special shoutouts to therapists Mike and Tim, but I had excellent, instructive, and helpful interactions with literally everyone working there; they're all great people. They tried hard to set me up for a smooth transition back into my life, and should probably all get raises. Being here helped reorient my life, equipping me with confidence to handle both known and unknown future adversities. I was surprised to cry when I said goodbye, but it was all so therapeutic and helpful that I did. I even feel teary gratitude writing this. Finally, I'd like to say that we get out of this sort of experience what we put into it, and attitude makes a big difference. If you think you have a problem, then this is a great place to start solving it. If you don't think you have a problem, then any rehab is going to be a pain. I know that acceptance is hard, but we usually land in this situation for an obvious reason. I guess I'd say a seed has to split in order to sprout. While the splitting part isn't always fun, I felt comfortable here to be able to grow, which made me feel proud and capable. Try like hell to avoid regret, cynicism, and distrust, as I've learned and seen in this context it holds us back. Instead, accept and commit, because it will pay off. Don't worry about how long you may be here, and just get everything that you can out of it while you are. Best wishes on your recovery.Posted on David SchatzTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I am writing to express my profound gratitude for the exceptional experience I have had at PSI. This is my second attempt at an intensive outpatient program, and the positive impact of the right program was truly remarkable. PSI provides personalized support both individually and in group settings, enabling me to gain a comprehensive understanding of my addiction at its core. The individuals I have encountered and the dedicated staff have made a profound and lasting impact on my journey. I deeply regret not discovering this facility sooner. If you are grappling with addiction, I highly recommend seeking the services of PSI. They are the ideal resource for individuals seeking effective treatment and support. Once again, I extend my sincere appreciation to everyone who has contributed to my positive experience.Posted on Adam AizenbergTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. If you need help this is the place to go. This place helped me when I was at my lowest point, and I couldn’t be more thankful for the Positive Sobriety Institute in helping me with my recovery. If I could give them more stars I would!Posted on Matthew DTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. If you’re a licensed professional being forced into an evaluation by a board or program, or PHP, I urge you to be extremely cautious before agreeing to an assessment with PSI/MCAP in Chicago. I went through their two-day evaluation as a fully compliant nurse with over a year of clean drug tests and no reported safety issues. Despite this, they diagnosed me with severe cannabis use disorder—even though I hadn’t used cannabis in over a year, never failed a single test, and used it legally in the past for sleep and anxiety under medical guidance. They also performed neurocognitive testing on me while I was under the influence of prescribed Valium, and still used the results to claim I was cognitively impaired—without offering a retest or acknowledging how invalid that makes the findings. Worse, they took my prescribed use of medications like Adderall and Klonopin—used exactly as ordered—and over a year ago, and labeled me with stimulant and sedative use disorders, even while acknowledging those were “iatrogenic” (caused by medical care). The report ignored my diagnosed ADHD and pathologized my disagreement with their findings as “poor insight” or “rigidity,” rather than legitimate advocacy. They cited no collateral sources, except to explain what iatrogenic was, they sited a source from 1978. I had no workplace incidents, and no objective safety concerns. Despite that, their report was used to suspend my license, cost me my jobs, and disrupt my life entirely. If you’re required to undergo a professional fitness evaluation, I strongly recommend choosing an evaluator who is unbiased, actually knows how to follow DSM-5 standards appropriately, and considers objective facts—not one who imposes overly broad, harmful, and unscientific judgments that can destroy your career.Posted on Lesley SeligerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I spent time as a primary therapist at PSI and have only wonderful things to say about the program and my experience there. The clinical staff is passionate, kind and talented. The administrative staff is committed to quality care with dignity. I will continue to refer to this program as a LCPC in private/group practice.
